ACTRESS JULIA ORMOND TO SPEAK AT WORLD ASSOCIATION OF DETECTIVES CONFERENCE IN DENVER
Focus on Human Rights, Human Trafficking and Slavery

The World Association of Detectives will be holding its 83rd Annual Conference at the Westin Tabor Center Hotel in Denver, Colorado September 16th through 20th, 2008. The association will be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year’s theme will be “An International Symposium for Human Rights Awareness”.

Those attending will be treated to a special appearance by international film star Julia Ormond.  Ms. Ormond is not attending to speak about her role in the movie “Surveillance”, which recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and will be released in the U.S. in September, but in her role as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and Founder and President of ASSET, the Alliance to Stop Slavery and End Trafficking.

Ms. Ormond will speak at the W.A.D. Past President’s Brunch which takes place at 11:00 on Friday September 19th.  Also on Friday, association President Allen Cardoza, will present a session on The Hague Convention and Civil Aspects of International Parental Child Abduction.  Attorney Bob Amsterdam, the world’s leading human rights lawyer with offices in London and Toronto will also be speaking. On Saturday morning, a seminar on “Human Trafficking and Slavery” will be presented by Larry Gassin and Dottie Laster of Strike Force Training.

In addition to keeping busy with her roles with the United Nations and ASSET, Ms. Ormond has traveled to several countries speaking on human rights issues. Ms. Ormond is well known for her film roles in motion pictures such as: “Legends of the Fall”; “Sabrina”; “Smilla’s Sense of Snow”; “First Knight”; and, “The Barber of Siberia.” This year, in addition to “Surveillance”, she has roles in several films including “Kit Kittredge, An American Girl”, and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, which is scheduled for release on Christmas Day.

The United Nations Declaration is an important and historic document which recognizes that inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world.

With members in over 75 different countries, the officers and members of the World Association of Detectives recognize the importance of this document and support the proclamation within.  Many countries will be represented in Denver.

Private Investigator Bob Heales has organized the conference and is the local host. He operates offices in Denver and Minneapolis. Heales hosted the association twenty years ago at the same hotel in 1988.  That year, local KCNC Channel 4 helicopter pilot Mike Silva won the “Truth in Action Award” for his life saving heroics involving a man who had been taken hostage by a bank robber. This year, Julia Ormond has been selected to receive this prestigious award which will be presented at the Friday brunch.

The conference will kick off with the customary Chairman’s Welcome Reception at 6:00 PM on Tuesday September 16th.  That event will be followed by the Board Meeting, General Business Session and Elections, Past President’s Brunch, Mountain and City Tours, Seminars, and will culminate with the President’s Gala Banquet and Awards Ceremony on Saturday evening.  The conference will then be followed by a Post Conference Tour to Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park.
