“Why Boys Fail” and Gender Specific Teaching To be Discussed  At Scarsdale Meeting March 14

Scarsdale, NY :  “Why Boys Fail” and gender specific teaching in primary and secondary schools, subjects now roiling the educational waters, will be probed here by leading mental health and educational experts March 14, .7:30 PM at the Scarsdale, NY  Middle School, 134 Mamaroneck Road.

St. John’s University Education Professor and Director of Field Experiences Dr. Richard T. Scarpaci is the key note speaker at the session presented by the Westchester County’s Psychiatric Society and Psychological Association, The On Step Institute for Mental Health Research, and the Scarsdale High School and Middle School PTAs. Other panelists are: Roberta Slavin, PhD: Psychotherapist and former NYC Elementary and Middle School Psychologist; Edward M. Stephens, M.D: Founder and Chair of the Committee on Men's Issues of the county Psychiatric Society and David Greene: (facilitator) Teacher at Scarsdale High School and Senior Options Coordinator.

Dr. Scarpaci’s  talk will cover recent research on structural differences between boys’ and girls’ brain functions, auditory characteristics, and other factors resulting in girls, on average, making higher grades in almost every academic area while boys have greater dropout rates and assignment to special education, discipline problems and placement in alternative schools,  reasons for the differences, their practical implications and steps that can be taken for the benefit of both genders.
