"Our customers were asking us for a larger and sturdier option," stated Paul Jackson, partner of Wakefield Asia Group, LLC. While the traditional Vietnamese phin is a simple aluminum or tin device that holds about 5 ounces, North Americans needed something larger since they drink more coffee. We decided to import the Long Cam filter, as they have an excellent reputation for design and construction of fine stainless implements. This will be the last phin that anyone will ever need," he said.
The filter set consists of three pieces -- the body which has a built-in spanner, the tamper, and the lid. the Phin is set on top of the coffee cup. Coffee is placed into the body and tamped with the tamper. The boiling water is then added to fill the body, and the lid id placed to retain the heat.
The ancient and ingenious phin is a staple household item in Vietnam, and is the eco-friendly alternative to single serving coffee makers. "The only waste it produces is a little more rich garden soil," said Jackson.
