Over 550 U.S. College Students To Port In China On Historic Voyage Around The World

HONG KONG (MMD Newswire) November 10, 2009 -- More than 550 students from the US and other nations will arrive in Hong Kong tomorrow morning, 11 November, as part of the Semester at Sea shipboard study-abroad program for a two-day stay in Hong Kong, before continuing on to Shanghai for an additional two days of exploring China from November 15-16. This is Semester at Sea's 100th voyage, making it an important landmark in the program's history, and China is one of the final countries on the program's impressive 108-day itinerary.

While in Hong Kong, a group of SAS students will participate in a service visit to the Shun Lee Neighborhood Elderley Centre in Hong Kong 12 November at 8:30 a.m. This visit is a part of the $100 Solution program, in which students will develop a way to make significant positive progress for the center using $100. The group will plan and teach a class for Hong Kong elderly learning English language skills. Media personnel are invited to attend.

Students will also be a part of an International Student Exchange with students from Chinese University of Hong Kong 11 November at noon. The students will have a round-table discussion, focusing on stereotypes each group holds about the other. They will also talk about the future of East Asia, and tour the campus. Members of the media are invited to watch the debate, which will begin after a traditional dim sum lunch.

Semester at Sea is not like most traditional study abroad programs. Students will get to explore 12 different ports over the next three months. The students are unique as well, coming from over 250 different colleges universities, and, while mostly American, they also come from several different countries, including China. They are taking a wide variety of classes by an impressive group of faculty, and will supplement their class work with the time they spend in each port. These classes are taught aboard the MV Explorer, a 24,000-ton, state-of-the-art passenger ship that Semester at Sea has outfitted as a traveling, floating university.

At Semester at Sea, classroom learning is integrated with hands-on fieldwork in destinations around the world-as many as 12 each semester-where participants gain deeper knowledge of world issues, economies, and cultures through comparative experiential study.

The Fall 2009 voyage departed Halifax, Canada on 28 June 2009. Before arriving in Chinaa, the ship stopped in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam where the students spent four days exploring the Vietnamese culture. After leaving China, the MV Explorer will continue down the on to Japan before returning to the United States.
