Stop birds from crashing into windows with UV reflective decals

Concord, NH July 21, 2008 -- Millions, perhaps over a billion birds die annually, and a major cause of death is when birds collide with windows. But window strikes can be prevented. Many organizations world-wide are conducting studies to alleviate the problem in regards to glass covered hi-rise buildings and skyscrapers. But Duncraft addresses the problem on a smaller, but equally important scale—that of the homeowner and backyard birder

Duncraft, a leader in the wild bird feeding industry, introduced their “Save-the Birds” decals last year with three basic designs. Now they’ve expanded to 12 designs—an inexpensive solution that works.

Birds fly into windows because the glass reflects clouds, sky and trees.  Birds perceive the reflections as flyable territory—the window itself is completely invisible to them. Collisions frequently result in the bird being killed, injured or stunned. Save-the-Birds static-cling decals reflect ultraviolet light, 100% visible to birds, but invisible to humans.  When placed on the exterior of a window, the reflective decals are seen by birds’ eyes as solid blue objects. The solid color breaks up the window reflections and acts as a stop sign-– birds fly off safely and do not hit the glass.

Sharon Dunn, president of Duncraft, describes Save-the-Birds decals. “You can see right through these decals.  There is a fine, visible outline, but in no way is your view obstructed.  The shapes we’ve created may even enhance the window, rather than detract from its appearance.  We have leaves, stars, snowflakes, and butterflies—twelve designs in all!  This simple solution really works to help prevent birds from crashing into windows—they’re easy to use and even decorative.”  Duncraft’s Save-the-Birds decals can be purchased online at www.duncraft.com
