The Trust for Public Land, a United States and Caribbean non-profit land conservation organization, transferred ownership of 270 acres of San Miguel’s prime coastal property, known as the Northeastern Ecological Corridor, to the people of Puerto Rico, assuring the land’s preservation and protection from encroaching development. The site is located on the north coast of Puerto Rico, 25 miles east of San Juan, in the area known as the Northeastern Ecological Corridor. It is home to an extraordinary array of tropical habitats seldom found in other parts of the world. It is also one of the last nesting areas for the federally endangered leatherback sea turtle.
Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá and actor Edward James Olmos took part in the announcement ceremony. A Video News Release covers the event as well as the preservation project itself. It is available in English and Spanish and contains a 3:24 minute package in English followed by Q & A for 2:06 minutes. The Spanish package is 5:06 minutes also followed by Q & A for another 2:13 minutes.
