Medicare's unbridled growth is one of the most serious problems facing our country
With a long-term debt six times larger than Social Security’s, Medicare is expected to double in size within the next 30 years, triple by 2050, and if costs are not contained, consume nearly 80 percent of our GDP by 2075. In order to support this unbridled growth, the Congressional Budget Office estimates the average federal income tax rate would have to increase to 66 percent. We spend more than twice as much per capita on health care as other developed countries, yet when these expenditures are taken into account, our performance is ranked 37th among the nations of the world. And when efficiency in improving citizens’ health is added in, we drop to a dismal 72! It’s time to get a handle on this tenuous situation.
