New Book Calls for Courage to Confront Injustice

First-time author Tom Shipley delivers a coming-of-age tale in Silencing the Drums

WARRENTON, VA (MMD Newswire) April 15, 2009 -- Set in post-World War II Virginia, Silencing the Drums by Tom Shipley relates the story of a boy on the cusp of manhood who sets out to explore his Southern heritage and discovers how to live life in the face of injustice and the aftermath of war.

Having recently lost his father in World War II, 14-year-old Billy Grayson is sent from his native New York City to spend the summer at his ancestral home in Virginia. Willing to make the best of the time spent with his relatives, Billy agrees to aide his spirited cousin on a mission to bring an evil townsman down and before long, finds himself on a journey of personal discovery. As the two teens seek justice, they learn that the path of the righteous takes courage, that honor comes with a price and that the road to salvation is not necessarily paved with good intentions.

Shipley grew up in what was then the small community of Fairfax, Va. He now feels that much of today's youth have lost the opportunity to have a simple life. "I wanted to present a plot that highlighted the beauty of living in a small town yet showed that everything is not necessarily what it seems," he says. "I hope to encourage young people to respect their past and their family's history, but also recognize the good and the bad. So often, adults are blindly wedded to the past, whereas teenagers have the courage to confront injustice because they have a lot less to lose."
