TAMPA, Fla. -- The traditional fathering style of Ward Cleaver in Leave It To Beaver is apparently long gone in most families.
A majority of fathers say they do their equal share when it comes to the children, and some dads say they actually do more than their female counterparts, according to a new poll by InteractiveDad.com, the free online magazine for fathers.
Thirty-eight (38%) percent of fathers say they do just as much as their child's mother, according to the InteractiveDad.com poll; nearly 14 percent say they actually do more than mom.
"I think many dads now know what moms figured out years ago," says InteractiveDad.com editor Glenn Lawrence. "You get back from your child much more than you give. And investing in your child pays dividends big time--in love and a bonding relationship that for years had exclusively been between children and their mothers."
Still, even among today's interactive dads, 37 percent say despite their involvement, mom still does more than they do; 7 percent say they have "traditional" parenting roles.
Moms, Not Dads Wake With Crying Baby Most Often
In most households, it's mothers, not fathers, who wake up in the middle of the night to care for a crying baby, the InteractiveDad.com poll shows.
A whopping 60 percent of dads admit that while they sleep, mom rolls out of bed to comfort children who wake in the wee hours of the night; 38 percent of dads say they get up.
"It used to be just moms who'd wake in the middle of the night," says Lawrence. "That's no longer true. In many homes, dads are taking on what had been traditional mom roles. Clearly that's not the case in every family but it's more common than most people think."
With millions around the world celebrating Mother's Day and Father's Day, the poll makes some important statements about parenting today and how gender roles are developing.
"Many of today's fathers go to malls, birthday parties and restaurants alone with their children," says InteractiveDad.com editor Glenn Lawrence. "Years ago that would've been unheard of. Dads have come a long way. And from what we're hearing, moms welcome the involvement and appreciate having a true partner in parenting."
