LOS ANGELES, CA - - September 7, 2006 - - The Parent Advocacy Group, a unique nonprofit organization which was created as a response to the dire conditions in America’s public schools, explains why the American Dream is fast becoming an impossible dream for millions of kids.
“The American Dream has always been a symbol of this great country of ours and has become synonymous with the hope of realizing one’s life ambitions”, says Jill Parish, author of “The American Dream,” and founder of The Parent Advocacy Group, which is supported by a growing number of key business and community leaders and educators alike. “But now one out of three high school students won’t graduate and those that do will be ill-prepared for success in life. There is a growing gap between the knowledge and skills taught in public schools and those necessary to be successful in the 21st century workplace. America’s public schools have become schools for the poor and a breeding ground for drugs and violence,” she explains.
“With all the attempts at school reform and the countless billions of tax dollars spent on education, the education system is still failing. This raises many questions such as why with our political leaders acknowledging that America’s economy, its leadership in the world and even its national security are at stake, haven’t we been able to correct the problem? Why 50% of new teachers are leaving their chosen profession within five years of teaching? Why has America gone from first to worst in international educational test scores, when most other counties spend far less than we do on their schools? Simply put. Our public education has been hijacked by politics. Our public school system is run by the government. And just when has a government bureaucracy ever been able to effectively manage anything? Our school system is dysfunctional because no one seems to care about the kids, especially special interest groups. Since it is politically incorrect to point fingers at those most responsible like the teachers’ unions, so we settle for ineffective government programs like “No Child Left Behind” designed to create the perception of having an accountability system. However, not only does this leave the brightest kids behind, but it also calls for spending even more of tax payers’ money.”
“The only effective solution to the educational crisis may have to come from the only group that has a vested interest in the education of our kids – the parents themselves. As the ultimate consumers of education, they are in an ideal position to overcome political obstacles and end the status quo of no accountability. As taxpayers and citizens, wouldn’t it be a novel idea if we got a decent return (student achievement) on our investment (tax dollars)?”
