The Oldest Church in Vienna Announces Its 140th Year |
|
November 12, 2007 |
First Baptist Church of Vienna, the first and oldest church in Vienna, Virginia announces its 140th anniversary. The celebration will take place on Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2, 2007. The Reverend Doctor Robert Smith, Jr., internationally known Professor of Christian Preaching at Beeson Divinity School is the keynote speaker for the dinner at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Rev. Herbert Love, Pastor of Providence Baptist Church in Leesburg, VA will deliver the 7:45 sermon on Sunday. A pilgrimage from the old church on Lawyers Road to the new church at 450 Orchard Street is planned for 9:30 Sunday morning. Reverend Dr. Smith will, again, deliver a riveting message during the 11:00 service on Sunday. The public is invited.
The church, which has a mixed but primarily African American congregation, is the first church to be established in the town of Vienna. It was established by a group of freed black men who bought the land from a former Union army officer for $1.00. Prior to that it was a "bush church" which means the members held services outside in the woods.
The church building is located in what was once considered the "Black Community" of Vienna. It is across the street from the first school built for black children in the town. Many of the homes in the surrounding area are still held by descendents of original Black owners; however, an influx of whites and others moving closer to the District have changed the demographic.
Even with that, the church continues to thrive due to the more than 30 ministries it offers at a high standard of service delivery. First Baptist serves their members, the local community, the nation and other countries. Ministries can include anything from health education to ministering to the infirmed and the spiritually-down trodden. There is a ministry for any age from infancy to the oldest member who is over 100 years and has been at the church her entire life. The church’s current theme of “Moving from Good to Great” is evident in the delivery of service for the membership and surrounding community.
