Dr. Mack Harrell, Endocrinologist will be on set to discuss progress, treatments during Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month
Pompano Beach, FL (MMD Newswire) September 13, 2012 -- The popular women's empowerment show "The Balancing Act" on Lifetime Television will air a segment entitled "Understanding the Link Between Thyroid Cancer and Hypothyroidism" on Monday, September 17th at 7 am (ET/PT) as part of their Health and Wellness series. September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month.
Special guest endocrinologist Dr. Mack Harrell will be on set to discuss how the disease is currently diagnosed and treated, and the progress that is being made towards a cure. A thyroid cancer survivor also joins the show to describe her experiences and offer hope to others. Thyroid cancer is treatable, but it does require a lifetime of careful monitoring.
According to the American Cancer Society, the incidence rate of thyroid cancer has been increasing sharply since the mid-1990s, and it is the fastest-increasing cancer in both men and women with an estimated 56,400 new cases expected in 2012. Thyroid cancer affects three times as many women as it does men.
Harrell will also talk about hypothyroidism and therapies available while doctors are testing for reoccurrence. Traditionally, patients go off their thyroid hormone therapy once a year to prepare for tests and endure weeks or months of hypothyroidism.
"With thyroid cancer rates so high and preventative measures so important, we're happy to give viewers this essential information so they can discuss the best possible options for them with their doctors", says Doug Campbell, Founder and Executive VP of Programming for "The Balancing Act."
