The 324 year old Oak Tree used to create this incredible tool was planted by André Le Nôtre during the 17th Century in the gardens of Versailles. An accurate and certified count of the tree’s rings place 1679 as the exact date. Not only was this tree Versailles’ oldest, but it was also notorious for being “Marie Antoinette’s Oak;” due to the fact that it was her favorite place to rest during hot summer days. The bottom section of the tree is on display at Versailles. A sapling of the same species, Quercus robur, was planted in its original location. The remaining portion of the tree was purchased in its entirety by Mr. Vialis, the creator of the famous Chateau Laguiole corkscrews, to make a variety of collectables.
In honor of its historic significance, this piece has been given a royal seal. The symbol on the blade of this pruner is an exact replica of the sun symbol located on the gated entrance of the palace of Versailles.
