New book unearths threat to family farms

First They Came for the Cows: An Activist's Story by Sharon Zecchinelli offers a fictionalized account of the author's battle with federal farm regulations

ENOSBURG FALLS, Vt. (MMD Newswire) June 24, 2009 -- First They Came for the Cows: An Activist's Story by Sharon Zecchinelli is a fictionalized account of the author's experiences as an activist against the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), a national program that collects data on farm animals. When small farmer Maddie Gillman is confronted by the NAIS's program of enforced enrollment, she soon finds herself becoming an unlikely advocate for the rights of animals and their human caretakers across the country.

"Ordinary people should not be afraid to become activists when the government is doing something that they feel is wrong," Zecchinelli says. "The NAIS is a United States Department of Agriculture program that is enrolling farms in a massive database, often without small farmer's consent," claims Zecchinelli.

Infused with the author's own experiences as a farmer and activist, the story follows Gillman as she learns about a campaign of manipulation and misinformation put forward by the USDA and their industrialized agriculture business partners. Maddie discovers that NAIS offers loopholes for massive industrial farms, favoring corporate operations at the expense of family farms and, ultimately, the consumers of American farm goods. Now she must take a stand, endangering her farm and all she holds dear.
