SAN FRANCISCO (MMD Newswire) October 5, 2011 - - Coast Guard law enforcement teams from Sector San Francisco and the Maritime Safety and Security Team San Francisco "swept" downtown San Francisco piers and ferries for hazards and potential threats today for upcoming Fleet Week festivities.

Increased security along the waterfront are one of the many measures to keep the public safe during this major community event where thousands of visitors are expected to converge in the city.

"The safety and security of Fleet Week patrons and visitors is the Coast Guard's and partner federal, state and local agencies' primary focus during this year's events," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Hartman, MSST canine handler.

Sector San Francisco's primary missions include homeland security, search and rescue, law enforcement, boating safety, aids to navigation and marine environmental protection with a vast area of responsibility reaching into the San Joaquin Delta out to Lake Tahoe and spanning north to Bodega Bay and south to Monterey.

The MSST's primary missions include port security, harbor defense and law enforcement in ports, harbors, internal waterways and coastal regions and they also provide security during major marine events.
