Provistas Introduces Downloadable National Provider Identifier Directories
October 04, 2007

NEW YORK, NY -- October 4, 2007 -- Provistas has debuted NPI downloadable directories at http://www.medical-coding.net/data/npi/ . Immediately available as SpeedEBook™ electronic books, ASCII data files, or Microsoft® Access databases, the directories are separated into organizations and indivdual providers and customized to comprise each state or the entire nation. NPI SpeedEBooks contain three indexes to locate a provider by name, NPI, or UPIN. Each provider's entry contains his or her credentials, specialty, state license number, practice address and telephone, mailing address and telephone, and even gender.

"Given the overwhelming need for all providers to access comprehensive NPI data, Provistas developed our directories to make finding NPIs simple," explained Darren Carter, MD, founder and CEO. "We realize this data, containing over 1.7 million providers and 530,00 organizations, is also incredibly valuable to health marketers. Contact, gender, and specialty information are key to targeting marketing efforts." The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, charged by the Department of Health and Human Services with managing the ennumeration and data dissemination required for implementing the NPIs, has had a hard time meeting the demand for NPI information. The NPI registry, an online search tool to locate NPI information, has not been functional for the past several weeks with a fix date of the end of September delayed until further notice.

The Healthcare Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), passed by Congress in 1996, established electronic standards and identifiers, like the NPI, to simplify electronic billing. All healthcare providers, including professional providers and healthcare organizations, who bill electronically are required to utilize the NPIs to identify referring or ordering providers to speed Coordination of Benefits (COB) payments. The Medicare program is moving forward with requiring all providers to change over to the NPI exclusively. Hospitals already have a deadline of January 1, 2008 to make the full conversion from legacy identifiers.
