New York City, N.Y (MMD Newswire) August 10, 2010 -- A recent study by researchers at Buffalo University has found that Resveratrol can help to fight aging and has anti-inflammatory properties.
The researchers placed 20 volunteers into two groups. One group received 40mg of resveratrol and the other took a placebo, once a day for 6 weeks.
Blood samples were taken at the start of the trial and then at intervals throughout the rest of the study. The results showed that the resveratrol suppressed the build up of oxidative stress, caused by free radicals - which release pro-inflammatory substances in the blood stream.
The author of the study Husam Ghanim, PhD, says that the extract reduces the rate of aging due to its ability to activate a group of genes called Sirtuins, which are associated with longevity. He also went on to say that they have found that resveratrol reduces the inflammation that is usually associated with stroke, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. All diseases caused by activation of the inflammatory protein, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)
James Betz, CEO of bioceutical firm, Biotivia said: "This evidence supports research that we collaborated on with the Albert Einstein School of Medicine and Ottawa Hospital. The Albert Einstein study investigated resveratrol's effect on impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and pre-diabetes and the results found that it increased insulin resistance." A second study at the same institution concluded that resveratrol enhanced mitochondrial function, an important property vis-a-vis the prevention and treatment of a number of human health conditions usually associated with aging."
Resveratrol is a naturally occurring phytoalexin that is found in plants whose function is to protect against attack from bacteria, fungi and other environmental stresses and threats. It is basically the plants immune system and is activated by stress and other harmful agents. The theory of zenohormesis postulates that a compound such as resveratrol, which protects plants can impart similar protection to animals, such as humans, who consume it.
Betz continued: "As more and more human clinical trials are undertaken into the effects of resveratrol, researchers are adding to their knowledge of this extraordinary compounds effects. Our resveratrol is 98% pure trans-resveratrol with both a 250mg 500mg strength supplement. Biotivia recently introduced the only true time release high-potency resveratrol supplement, Transmax TR, which provides a constant release of resveratrol into your blood plasma over a period of up to 24 hours"
The study is published online in advance of an upcoming print issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism
