February 13 – March 31, 2008 Gallery Korea Korean Cultural Service New York 460 Park Avenue (between 57th & 58th St.), 6th Floor New York, NY 10022 (212) 759 – 9550 Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday, 10:00am – 5:00pm Free Admission
Opening Reception: Wednesday, February 13, 2008, 6 – 8pm
Korean Cultural Service New York is pleased to present Nam June Paik – Intimate and Meditative Works by the Master as the first Gallery Korea exhibition of 2008. Paik is best known as a video artist and the charismatic father of media art. Parallel with Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol, the Korean born Nam June Paik is identified as one of the most significant representatives of art in the 20th century.
This exhibition, however, highlights the less familiar but more unencumbered side of Nam June Paik’s oeuvre. By introducing smaller and quieter works by the master—drawings, sketches, prints, black-and-white photos, small objects and canvases—the exhibition wishes to present a different side of Paik that is more representative of his inner world; a world that was influenced and motivated by his Korean background and Asian sentiments. Nam June Paik – Intimate and Meditative Works by the Master will include TV Candle (1983), Three Neon- televisions (1990), Homeless Buddha (1992), Beuys Vox (1988), Up Bush (1993) among many other works that are spontaneous, open, astonishingly child-like, ultimately intuitive, warm, homely and deeply spiritual whilst unburdened by religion. In total, 40 pieces of Paik’s works will be on display. Black-and-white photographs of Paik’s performances taken by Lim Young Kyun will also be on view. All the works included in the exhibition are from the Cyan Collection and other private collectors in the Greater New York Area. We encourage you to come and join the personable Paik’s timeless artworks.
This exhibition is curated by guest curator, Ms. Inhee Iris Moon.
