CHICAGO TO HONOR JAPANESE AMERICAN WWII VETS ON APRIL 22

Chicago, IL (MMD Newswire) February 7, 2012 -- The Nikkei World War II Veterans Tribute Committee, a coalition of Chicago's Japanese American civic organizations, is pleased to host a commemorative reception at 12:30 P.M., on April 22, at the Operating Engineers Facility, 2260 S Grove Street, honoring all local veterans who served during World War II, including members of the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service.

On November 2, 2011, the Congress of the United States awarded Nikkei veterans with the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal for their extraordinary service to the nation while many of their families were imprisoned and viewed as "enemy aliens" by their government. That was 70 years ago and few remain, and even fewer still were able to go to Washington, DC to attend the awards ceremony at the Capitol Building.

The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian award in the United States. It is given to an individual or unit who perform and outstanding deed or act of service to the security, prosperity, and national interest of the United States.

On July 15, 1946, President Harry Truman reviewed the 442nd RCT at the outer south lawn of the White House following its march down Constitution Avenue and paid the Nikkei the ultimate tribute, "you fought the enemy abroad and prejudice at home, and you won".

Now, three generations later. The Nikkei WWII Veterans Tribute will allow the Chicago community the opportunity to express the pride and deep respect they feel for their local heroes --- to remember those who are not with us --- and to witness how much has been won. Interested veterans, widows, next of kin and friends are encouraged to register for this happy event.
