New artist steps onto neo-soul scene

Lansing, MI--Erykah Badu. Jill Scott. India Arie. It's time to share the spotlight and record sales.

For the fans and listeners of Neo-Soul music, Lyric'lee of Chicago is the next big musician that will definitely grace the empty pages of the genre's artist spotlight. Raised on the south-side of Chicago, she grew up in a house of music. From the early age of 4 she has been involved in some form of music, learning to play simple duets on the piano with her mother, age 6, teaching herself church hymns like "Amazing Grace" and "Little Drummer Boy" by ear with accompaniment, and age 8, participating in the chime choir and singing in the youth choir at church. At the age of 9, she took up studying the flute.

 

Lyric'lee received a scholarship to Michigan State University for Flute Performance to study with Richard Sherman. While there she played with the MSU Wind Symphony and assisted in individual student and professorial projects on her flute. She also became very active with the MSU Jazz Program directed by Rodney Whitaker of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra participating in Big Band and Octet ensembles playing Tenor Saxophone and Flute.

It is there that she had the opportunity to meet and learn from Jazz Greats like Wynton Marsalis, Ron Blake, Wycliffe Gordon, Wessell "Warm Daddy" Anderson, Andrew Speight, Walter Blanding, and Victor Goings to name a few. During college is when Lyric'lee became aware of a profession called Music Therapy, established in 1944, that uses music in therapy and as therapy to assist in affecting and altering individual's lives for the better. With influences from Erykah Badu, Indie Arie and Jill Scott; Lyric'lee creates that which has been missing from the music industry these last few years. With a new sound and original content, Lyric'lee takes music back to the roots of Hip Hop and R&B, delivering conscious messages related to the trials and tribulations of everyday struggles.

With her debut album Journal Entries, due this early summer, it is comprised of everyday life as a journal would be, not focusing on one specific topic. "Journal Entries doesn't restrict me to focus on one specific theme," said Lyric'lee. "The title gives me the opportunity to emphasize different aspects of life, not just love or relationships." Lyric'lee is looking forward to releasing her first single soon.
