MySpace Helps Musician Accomplish 30-Year Dream

Boulder, CO March 5, 2007 – After nearly 30 years, struggling to do what he loves, Michael Harrison is finding success using the popular MySpace social networking site to promote his music as an independent musician.

Harrison recorded his first album in 1979, and found it nearly impossible to promote his music without the backing of a major label. He had an early brush with fame: an offer of a major recording contract in 1980, which was ultimately cancelled, due to overspending by a “famous” band of the time.

 

 
Discouraged but still hopeful, he began traveling the United States, sometimes hitchhiking long distances to have the opportunity to play with some great musicians.

“Life has a way of kicking you in the teeth, sometimes. It was a struggle to put together a band; harder to keep one together. There were long periods of time when I, myself, had to put my music on the back burner for a while, working as a carpenter to make ends meet and help raise my daughter. But the dream never died; the songs would come to mind when I least expected it. I knew it was good music.”

Last year, he decided to give it one more try, with the help of talented musicians, people who create good graphics, and computer-savvy friends. He recorded a second album, and is using MySpace Music to build a solid fan base and market his music. He is seeing a steady increase in sales of his music on the internet.

“MySpace works. My music is getting attention around the world. I even have fan sites! People are listening. That’s all I ever wanted really; just wanted people to hear my music.”

What’s the secret? “I make contact one person at a time, introduce my music, and stay in touch with my fans. It’s important to remember these are the people who are helping you succeed. It’s hard work, but it’s definitely worth it.”

The grass-roots marketing campaign is working. Harrison is currently looking to form a working band, and recording a music video and another CD.
