Scholars and members from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths in the Dallas area will celebrate Mother’s Day with an inter-faith dialog at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) on Saturday, May 10th, 2008, to discuss how motherhood forms the cornerstone of family values in each of the three religions.
The inter-faith forum around Mother’s Day has been an annual event for the last five years. Attendees of the forum in the past have found the dialog useful in helping them learn more about the similarities across mainstream religions in the US. The event, organized by the Institute of Islamic Learning in the Metroplex (IILM), is co-sponsored by Thanks-Giving Square, and Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation of Plano, Texas.
Families from each of the faiths will be in attendance. “The evening will underscore that family remains central to all facets of the American society,” said Asif Effendi, Director of the IILM. “The celebration highlights not only the importance of motherhood but also underscores how each religion emphasizes family as part of its value system.”
"This celebration of the Mother’s Day event is a grassroots effort at bringing all of us a little closer around the core theme of family. Inter-faith programs such as this help explore diverse perspectives on a common topic that is familiar to followers of all religions,” said Seth Miller Co-chair of Adult Education Committee at Congregation Beth Torah in Richardson, Texas.
The event will follow a familiar format of a moderated discussion with a panel of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim scholars followed by questions from the attendees.
