St. Paul, Minn. (MMD Newswire) October 24, 2012 -- Representatives announced today the 2012 Miles for Melanoma 5K Run/Walk presented by Dermatology Consultants raised over $40,000 in its first year. More than 200 runners and walkers participated in the event, held August 11, 2012 at Como Park in St. Paul. The Miles for Melanoma 5K was established by Dr. Malinee Saxena of Dermatology Consultants as one of the first events in the Twin Cities to raise money for melanoma research.
"Skin cancer is now the most common form of cancer in the U.S., and melanoma is the deadliest kind, yet it receives less funding for research," said Dr. Saxena. "I'm proud that our event was able to achieve this success in its first year. We plan to build on those results in the future." Dr. Saxena added that support from participants, sponsors and volunteers helped net donations exceed 70% of total funds raised.
The Miles for Melanoma 5K benefitted the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF), the largest independent, national organization devoted to melanoma in the United States. The MRF is committed to the support of medical research targeted toward finding effective treatments and eventually a cure for melanoma. The MRF also educates patients and physicians about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of melanoma.
