NICEVILLE, Fla. (MMD Newswire) March 17, 2010 -- Whole World Blind by Michael B. Mefford is a story of loss, revenge and the unintended consequences than can follow from well-intentioned choices.
When Dr. Jack Carson fell asleep at the wheel and lost his son in a tragic car accident, his life crumbled around him. Struggling to put the broken pieces back together, Carson faces death again three years later when he finds a body at the mental hospital where he serves as a psychiatrist. A note on the body says the killing will only end with Carson's murder. Alex Tanner, the beautiful and intelligent detective assigned to his case, gives Carson reason for optimism. However, the killer, who blames Carson for his mother's suicide, is watching and waiting. A childhood spent with a sadistic father has left the murderer with a calculated and awful purpose. He doesn't just want to kill Carson; he wants to create an existence so miserable the psychiatrist will understand the true meaning of evil.
"The theme of this book is really about the horrible wake violence leaves in its path," Mefford says. "It's about the protagonist's ability to try to absorb the terrible violence that is visited on him without succumbing to the violent depths of his own soul."
Set in Columbia, S.C., the book features the fictional J. Pickman Institute, an aging structure that serves as the state mental hospital. Mefford took inspiration for the J. Pickmann Institute from the building where he served his medical residency. The book portrays Dr. Jack Carson and his antagonist interacting inside its dark recesses, aiming to draw readers into a suspenseful world full of long-kept secrets.
The online book review company, The Book Journal, says, "Wow. Really great ... There have been many [psychological] thrillers as of late, but this one has structure and substance ... I was hooked from the first page ... If you like psychological thrillers, this is a must read."
