Readers first meet Pierre during his family travels to Port-au-Prince; the group is leaving behind its hometown following embarrassment brought on by the author's father. Unlike most Haitians, Pierre attended school beyond elementary-level classes, but his education was a heavy burden for his family due to the country's miserable economic conditions.
Fortunately for Pierre, his university studies sparked his ambition to do better. The author believed in the power of education and entrepreneurship; he later spent 10 years studying self-awareness and the principles of economic growth, which propelled Pierre to develop, GaMa, his computer business.
The 2010 earthquake demonstrated Haitians' capability of surviving the most devastating and dangerous natural conditions, which has since motivated countless people around the world. Pierre supplements this view through his persistence to do better, though he was often ostracized in his own nation due to his success.
"It is not enough to succeed in Haiti," says Pierre. "Success must be achieved with others. Haitian attitudes and beliefs are not conducive to prosperity, and some people will destroy anything that symbolizes it."
The author's story aims to demonstrate how to pursue a dream in the face of resistance. Pierre's refusal to let economic background or skin color hinder his chances of success, along with his education and determination to fulfill a dream, helped lead him out of a precarious situation and into the embodiment of success as a model entrepreneur.
