DFW Clinics Provide Juvenile Arthritis Sufferers with Free Massages

October 16, 2012 (MMD Newswire) -- Massage Envy's Healing Hands for Arthritis, an annual fundraiser for The Arthritis Foundation, netted more than $678,000 for the nonprofit - $27,155 from 28 DFW clinics alone. More than 800 Massage Envy clinics nationwide participated in the event, donating $10 from every Sept. 19 massage and facial to The Arthritis Foundation. Ten percent of all BioFreeze and Wyndmere product sales also were donated to the foundation. In addition, several DFW Massage Envy Clinics sponsored children who suffer from arthritis, providing them with a complimentary massage to help relieve pain and stiffness. Among them were 9-year-old Kamryn Bordges, sponsored by the Massage Envy Las Colinas, 11-year-old Maren Hoffa, sponsored by Massage Envy SPA South 360, 10-year-old Sarah Lewinski, sponsored by Massage Envy Stonebriar and 4-year-old Brylea Longenecker, sponsored by Massage Envy SPA Rockwall. "The Healing Hands event was wonderful. The owner, manager and staff did an amazing job making Kamryn feel special and getting the word out about the Healing Hands campaign. This was Kamryn's first massage and she is hooked," said her mother, Heidi Bordges. "I'm so excited Massage Envy is doing this because I see how much Kamryn struggles with the pain, and the emotional toll it takes on her. It's not an easy way to live."

Today more than 300,000 children and 50 million adults suffer from arthritis. By the year 2030, an estimated 67 million or 25 percent of the projected total adult population will have the disease. Massage Envy and The Arthritis Foundation share a common understanding about the devastating effects of arthritis on the body and the potential for massage therapy to relieve and control certain symptoms. Massage therapy can play an important role in alleviating the pain and swelling caused by arthritis, while improving flexibility and circulation and reducing stress and anxiety. "Healing Hands is a great thing to support and talk about because massage really helps people with arthritis. Like if my knees are hurting and I get a massage, it will help me for about two weeks," said 10-year-old arthritis sufferer Sarah Lewinski. In addition to hosting Healing Hands for Arthritis, Massage Envy is a national sponsor of the Arthritis Foundation's other signature event, Arthritis Walk®. Massage Envy owners from across the country have and will continue to have a presence at their local Arthritis Walk events to share information about the benefits of massage therapy, provide chair massages and support the Arthritis Foundation's mission.
