Children's Coming-of-Age Novel Discusses the Dangers of Alcohol and the Need for Community and Family Love

In Mary Kay Abbott's novel, Pearl of Baxter Grove, a young girl searches for a surrogate mother when her own is killed in a car accident

SAN DIEGO (MMD Newswire) April 15, 2009 -- In the children's novel Pearl of Baxter Grove, Mary Kay Abbott's main character struggles with her dysfunctional family, two hateful women and her mother's alcoholism.

Casey Walker is only 11 when her mother is killed in a terrible accident. Her father is ill-equipped to tend to his grieving daughter, but Casey clearly needs some mothering. Her two choices, though, are not promising: a nasty shop owner who hates kids or a newcomer who greets Casey with a gun. Slowly, Casey discovers the loving, tender person beneath the prickly exterior.

Abbott aims to show children how, with the help of neighbors reaching out to one another, being the only young girl in an otherwise old-folks community doesn't have to be isolating. Abbott believes that with the economy plummeting, and more out-of-work people perhaps turning to negative outlets such as alcohol, her story could be especially timely. "Children need to learn that despite everything they try to do to get their parents to stop drinking, that behavior is not their fault," says Abbott.
