Kid Picks Online: A new website that lets kids pick the flicks
October 18, 2007
New York, NY -- October 18, 2007 -- Kids and parents finally have an online resource to help guide them in their movie selections and DVD rentals and purchases. The site allows them to see and hear REAL kids giving REAL reviews about movies they have seen. Who better to judge kids movies than kids themselves?

Kid Picks creator and producer Felicia Scarangello, an NYC mom, was surprised at the films that the younger children chose to review -- films that were not exactly age appropriate. A 5 year old goes on to review Spiderman 3, calling it “so awesome, I couldn’t believe it,” while another kid found the love story to be “amazing” and proclaiming “Most boys wouldn’t say this but I think [the romance in the film] was beautiful. Spiderman and Mary Jane would make a great couple. They both love each other and whoever loves each other must be a great couple.”

Kidpicksonline.com encourages kids to submit their own movie reviews so every voice can be heard. The website designer and developer John Chidiac, an NYC dad, built the site so that kids can submit their own reviews. Kid Picks hopes to foster a community where kids can learn to appreciate film by hearing others’ opinions and by thinking about movies they’ve seen. From the kid next door to celebrity kids (like the stars of Nickelodeon’s The Naked Brothers Band), every kid is a critic!

Micah Weisberg, a producer and Kid Picks’ chief cameraman and editor, finds it fascinating how varying the opinions are between the kid critics.” When reviewing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , opinions of what age the movie is best suited for varied from “it’s great for all ages” to “little kids would be scared of [Lord] Voldemort cause he looks weird; he’s completely bald and his ears are tiny.”

Common reactions from parents when they hear about the site are “wow, I can’t believe there isn’t something like that already out there” and “It’s about time a resource like this came out” as well as “when can I see my daughter’s review on the site!?”

The site 10,000 daily hits recently after being featured on Yahoo's daily web show, "The 9." Kids and their parents are logging on to kidpicksonline.com to hear what other kids are saying about the biggest kids’ movies.

Today on the web, tomorrow Kid Picks is gearing up for the possibility of it’s own TV show.

Why listen to what Roger Ebert has to say about children’s movies? It’s been quite a while since he was a kid.
