Buddy Boutonniere, a big-hearted standard poodle, lives in the bare backyard of a tract home in the desert. MacKenzie, a border collie and Javier, a Chihuahua, provide Buddy with companionship and bring him food scraps when his neglectful owners forget to feed him.
Buddy endures a series of unsuitable living situations and passes away when his protector, MacKenzie, is killed by an evil Hummer driver. When Buddy is brought back to life by Sonny, the Good Shepherd, he's granted a wish to live with a hospitable lady, but he must promise to go with Sonny when he returns. Buddy soon has a loving home and befriends an elder pointer dog, Skootch. Together they rescue abandoned and abused canines and become closer over the years.
On Skootch's 15th birthday party, Sonny returns for Buddy. True to his word, the poodle goes without resistance. Sonny takes Buddy to Haven, the canine paradise, where he is reunited with MacKenzie. Sonny explains the rules in Haven: Dogs acquire free will and give up their role of caring for humans. Their only responsibility is to help guide other dogs to Haven. Buddy excels at guiding, but on a mission to bring back a military dog from Afghanistan, Buddy breaks the rule and helps a human, the dog's Marine partner. Buddy's big heart gets him into trouble with the residents of Haven, who become furious with the poodle's good deeds.
"I portray dogs that have not been treated very well by humans," says Russell. "I hope I am helping to teach kids that we need to protect and provide for our canine friends. I create a specific moral universe with rules and consequences, and also explore the boundary between what is right and what is expected or accepted."
Buddy's story aims to teach young readers about the bonds of love and friendship, the role of free will in building character and the importance of responsibility in our lives.
