Private Military to end Japanese Whaling |

January 03, 2008 |
AUSTRALIAN artist Anthony White is working on an extreme and controversial solution to end Japanese whaling activities in Australian waters.
Mr White has written to Blackwater Worldwide for their assistance in sinking illegally operating Japanese whaling ships.
Blackwater Worldwide is an international security provider, currently contracted by the United States government to provide security services in Iraq.
Mr White said that to his knowledge this would be the first time a private military company had been used to protect whales.
“I simply can’t sit back and see our protected wildlife continually slaughtered in our waters,” Mr White said.
“I want the situation sorted out once and for all so that our whales are protected.
“I am sure that many people will say that this is extreme behaviour, but these Japanese ships are operating illegally and are blatantly flaunting our country’s laws.”
Mr White said his action was no different from the routine border protection carried out by Australian quarantine officers on Indonesian fishing boats operating illegally in Australian waters. Quarantine officers detain the operators and destroy the illegal fishing vessels.
“In this case, Blackwater Worldwide would be better equipped and trained to deal with the larger Japanese ships operating in the harsh conditions of the Antarctic waters ,” Mr White said.
Mr White is a Queensland-based artist producing controversial work often likened to US artist Andy Wharhol.
Mr White wrote to Blackwater Worldwide in December requesting a quote for the whale protection and is currently waiting for a response.
