Inventive Opportunities in Commercial Real Estate: One Entrepreneur’s Vision for Beleaguered Buildings
West Palm Beach, FL -- May 16, 2007 -- When entrepreneur Mark J. Maher decided to enter the self-storage industry, he knew he’d have to get creative. Soaring real estate prices and fierce competition from existing industry giants prohibited him from purchasing many of the locations he scouted. When a chance arose to purchase severely neglected quonset huts in the downtown neighborhood of Flamingo Park, Maher seized the opportunity to buy the beleaguered and forgotten buildings in October of 2004 and he set off in pursuit of his self-storage dream.
West Palm Beach Mayor Louis Frankel along with Mark J. Maher will preside over a ribbon cutting ceremony announcing the Grand Opening of Arc Rib Storage located at 502 Kanuga Drive in West Palm Beach on Saturday, May 26th, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. The event marks the completion of an 8 month renovation plan to repair the years of neglect and hurricane damage sustained in 2005 and the building’s conversion to self-storage. Maher explains, “It was important to me to restore and recognize the historical significance of the building. I wanted this project to blend into the landscape of the neighborhood.” Maher approached the city’s Historical Preservation Board with his renovation plans and won historic designation for his building along with approval for his plans. With the blessing of one of the original builders, Dale Alexander, and a stack of 1941 building photos Alexander provided as reference, Maher’s vision for the building has culminated in the creation of a 65 + unit self-storage facility with 6 outdoor parking storage spaces which very closely resembles the original building. “As construction projects go, this has been one of the most challenging. Devising a way to re-construct the giant 66 ft. wooden arched trusses, characteristic of many quonset huts of the day, posed the biggest challenge.” Maher’s vision has helped to clean up a blighted area in an otherwise charming and historic neighborhood of West Palm Beach. “It’s my hope that my neighbors in Flamingo Park will embrace this as their neighborhood storage facility,” says Maher.
Mark J. Maher is the President/Owner of Lariat Organization Company, a commercial and residential real estate development and construction consulting firm based out of Boca Raton, Fl. Maher specializes in the restoration of historic properties and his consulting services have been employed by both private and corporate interests throughout South Florida.
