OREX Dissolvable Product Technology Offers Alternative to Landfilling Industrial Waste
January 17, 2008
Eastern Technologies, Inc. (ETI) has perfected a radical, new dissolvable product technology that provides an environmentally friendly option for waste disposal for industries that deal with hazardous materials or those that generate huge volumes of wastes.  ETI uses a hot water soluble polymer, called polyvinyl alcohol, to manufacture a comprehensive line of specially engineered consumable items, such as protective clothing, mops, wipes and waste bags, marketed under the trade name OREX™.  Following use, ETI uses its patented OREX Processing system to dissolve and treat the used products. The resulting liquid is converted to simple carbon dioxide and water by microorganisms in the local municipal wastewater treatment plant, thereby eliminating huge volumes of solid waste that would otherwise be disposed of in landfills.  The innovative OREX product and processing technology addresses waste management challenges in a new, environmentally responsible way.

When you hear “dissolvable clothing,” it may first sound like a gag gift or something you might find in an adult entertainment store, right?  Well to John Steward, President and CEO of ETI, it was a radical new way to solve some old problems of protecting workers and managing waste in industrial applications.  Mr. Steward, a scientist and former safety manager at a large electric power generation facility, knows these problems well.  According to Mr. Steward, “Environmentally conscientious companies are constantly looking for new technologies that provide the convenience of single-use products but without the waste; particularly those industries with troublesome waste streams. Every industry has a responsibility to employ practices that will address the growing waste issues of the world.”

Under Mr. Steward’s direction, ETI has addressed these problems with the innovative OREX product and processing technology.  The backbone of the OREX product line is an engineered polymer called polyvinyl alcohol (PVA).  The molecular structure of PVA can be engineered to make it soluble in water at low temperatures or high temperatures.  For this particular application, PVA that dissolves at about 200 degrees Fahrenheit is used.  Mr. Steward and an associate have designed and patented the OREX Processing System that dissolves the used OREX products and treats the resulting liquid as necessary to render it non-hazardous.  The discharged liquid is organic in nature and is easily decomposed by microorganisms in the local wastewater treatment plant.  It is an environmentally friendly process and the discharged liquid ultimately decomposes to carbon dioxide and water and is released back to the environment, thus eliminating the tons and tons of waste that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill.

Mr. Steward says, “This is a technology that was truly designed ‘beginning with the end in mind.’  It is a radically different approach and is unlike any other product and treatment technology currently available.” Is this technology for real? You bet it is. Many large corporations in the USA have transitioned to OREX over the past 5 years. ETI currently warehouses and distributes OREX products and operates two large OREX Processing units at its facility located in Alabama.  ETI processed over 1,000,000 pounds of used OREX in 2007 and is currently capable of processing about 2,000,000 pounds of used products annually. Additional capacity can easily be constructed as demand increases.  To view the video showing the amazing OREX Process, go to the following link…. http://www.orex.com/OREX%20Process%20.wmv
