There's more to Julian than just apple pie. After several years of raising private donations from family and friends, Stephanie and Thayer Brehm of Julian, California and parents to son Dylan,15(survivor of childhood leukemia)will officially open the barn doors of The Leg-Up Ranch on Saturday, September 22, 2007. Located at 4859 Highway 79, from 2-6pm the ranch will be open to the public for a free day of horse rides and hayrides, ponycarts and petting corral, live music, and local country food. The vision of The Leg-Up Ranch is to bring hope, strength, and an inspirational spirit to children and their families who are afflicted with a life-threatening disease. Visitors will get a first hand look at the natural, ranch setting that aims to support a loving interaction with animals, in turn inspiring children and their families during the hardship of dealing with serious health issues and the accompanying medical treatments. With proper riding facilities, a knowlegeable and nurturing staff who has shared their painful experience, and the acceptance and unconditional love from animals, The Leg-Up Ranch helps these children and their entire family forget for a day and feel empowered rather than victimized by their disease.
From humble roots and the Brehm family's heart-wrenching journey, their dream is that through private and corporate donations future days of retreat will be provided to families at no cost to them. The Leg-Up Ranch is establishing relationships to work in conjunction with the Ronald McDonald House, Children's Hospital, several other local hospitals, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
