Help for Parents on the Internet
Lacrosse, Wi – May 29, 2007 - Internet Referee, a revolutionary home computer monitoring program to help parents ensure that their children are safe while using the Internet, is now available free at http://internetreferree.com. In answer to growing concerns about kids and appropriate internet use, Sergeant Laboratories worked to develop a program that would be easy for the most technologically challenged parent to implement.
Engineered by parents for parents, Internet Referee allows parents to teach proper use of the Internet without having to deprive their kids of the powerful research and learning opportunities it provides. Parents can set rules of appropriate computer use and be sure that the rules are followed and enforced. They can correct misuse and use the situation as a teaching moment to help their children to learn how to use the internet properly.
Created to be clear to all users and provide timely notices of possible problems, this program reinforces good parenting methods. Internet Referee avoids problems like punishment weeks after an event, arbitrary enforcement of rules, and questions after the fact about what may have taken place on the computer. Now parents can check at any time and receive immediate reports that let them know their rules are being followed.
Parents may instruct Internet Referee to block inappropriate websites, flag inappropriate words or phrases, translate IM lingo to adult friendly, understandable phrases, and set time limits on games or other computer activities. If a child taps into an inappropriate site, uses inappropriate language, or exceeds parental computer time limits, Internet Referee records the information so that the parent can find the site, date, time, user. This information will be available to the parent at any time.
Unlike current home computer monitoring systems, Internet Referee is not spy ware. It is not intended to hide in the background in order to “catch” a user doing something wrong. Rather, it is visible to anyone using the computer. If a child opens a website the parent has deemed inappropriate, the child is immediately notified and the site is blocked.
Aware of the importance of the proper use of technology as a life tool, Sergeant Laboratories works to alleviate concerns about young people misusing computers. The company also developed the powerful Aristotle software currently being used in schools to monitor student computer use.
The 13-year old Wisconsin-based company also designs and produces monitoring software for banks, small businesses, large corporations and government. Tracking employees’ uses of company computers helps insure computer security and compliance to acceptable use policies.
