SARASOTA, FLORIDA -- January 15, 2008 – GREAT BURIAL REEF, Inc. announces construction of its charter living memorial reef, 1.8 miles west of Lido Key, in Sarasota, Florida.
Jason Rew, founder and CEO of GREAT BURIAL REEF, Inc., announced today the construction of the firm’s charter living memorial reef. GREAT BURIAL REEF, Inc. builds living ocean reefs and honors loved ones by placing sealed urns containing their cremated remains within the reef structures. The charter reef, Silvertooth Memorial Reef, is located 35 feet below the surface of the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, just 1.8 miles west of Sarasota, Florida, and will eventually be home to hundreds of individual memorials.
“Our company is focused on land conservation through alternatives to traditional land burial. For families who choose cremation, loved ones can be safely and permanently placed within our living ocean reefs, creating lasting legacies, and helping us to revitalize diminishing marine habitat,” Rew commented.

The Reef Memorials, which weigh 2,500 pounds each, are cast in Sarasota from 100% natural concrete, and are carefully deployed to the ocean floor in groups. Each Reef Memorial is cast with two burial niches, each of which will contain an urn containing the cremated remains of an individual. The niches are permanently sealed after placement under solid bronze memorial plaques, bearing the name and life dates of the individual being honored. Couples may be placed separately over time.
“At the very heart of our focus is the service we provide to families,” Rew said. “We are proud to bring this new service to our community, and we are honored to assist families in creating lasting, permanent memories of their loved ones.”
Families participate in the placement of the Memorial Urn through a unique ceremony called The Memorial Experience, in which they board a charter boat and witness the actual placement of the Memorial Urn from just above the reef site. At the conclusion of the dedication, families receive the precise GPS coordinates of their loved one’s resting place, and an underwater photograph of the placement. Families are guided through the entire process by a member of the GREAT BURIAL REEF staff.
The moderate investment costs less than a typical land burial. Financing and pre-planning services are available. Families interested in learning about GREAT BURIAL REEF may consult the website, www.greatburialreef.com, which has service details, pricing, and contact information. Families may also consult their local funeral director for a referral.
“We have created ‘the most peaceful resting place on Earth’ to provide families with a unique, eco-friendly way to honor their loved ones for generations to come,” Rew said.
GREAT BURIAL REEF, Inc. combines the traditions of burial at sea with environmentally-inspired technology, building living ocean reefs and honoring loved ones by placing sealed urns containing their cremated remains within the reef structure.
