Gospel Recording Artist Empowers the Homeless
September 20, 2007
Atlanta, GA -- September 20, 2007 -- Gospel recording artist and producer James Cockerham merges his music with his commitment to uplifting others.  At a service for the homeless in downtown Atlanta, Georgia on September 16, 2007, he played a series of songs from his recent CD, and praise and worship songs.  Cockerham enjoys encouraging people through his music. “One of the gifts I have is I am an encourager,” he said. “I enjoy telling people about the good I see in them. I love helping people realize their worth.”

The service was hosted by Faith Foundation Ministries at the Apostolic Church of Christ in Atlanta, Georgia.  The modest interior of the church was burgundy and white. However, as Cockerham played the piano and bellowed songs out, his music transcended the modest environment. As he stood at the keyboard performing for the crowd, people expressed a mixture of emotions. Some stood up and clapped. Others sung along. One woman sat in her seat with her head lowered in prayer.

Pastor Peter Ayeni of Faith Foundation Ministries appreciates Cockerham’s gifts.  “I have known James to be a giver,” said Ayeni. “He gives all that has been given to him. His talents as a musician are precious and appreciated.”

James Cockerham is no ordinary recording artist. “It’s one thing to sing,” said Pastor Oliver Wells, of the music producers for the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir’s recent release. “It’s another thing to serve and James has been blessed to do both. He’s got a great music ministry, but he’s a servant. I would recommend James to anybody.”

A servant of the Lord, Cockerham regularly plays for charities. His goal is “to help the little guys who are doing big things.” He only charges for transportation, food, lodging, and for each person in attendance to receive one of his CDs.  Musicians typically charge a flat fee. However, Cockerham wants for charities to raise as much money as possible for their causes.

Dr. Ndugu T’Ofori-Atta, professor emeritus at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia, applauds Cockerham’s commitment to charities.  “He’s been well-known and appreciated and supported. He’s always had an outreach of compassion,” said T’Ofori Atta. “I wholeheartedly can affirm the consistency of his character and the vastness in his commitment to music.”

Perhaps the final testament to James Cockerham’s ministry of music is his songs.  On his latest CD, “Reflections of the HEART,” he sings soulfully of praising the Lord. In “Jesus, You Are Worthy to Be Praised,” he sings, “When I see a baby smiling / in a loving mother’s arms / When I see the lightning flashing / Or I hear the thunder roar / When I praise you in the silence / I lift my eyes unto the hills / Jesus, you are worthy to be praised.”

James Cockerham’s commitment to playing for charities is ongoing.  For interviews and media inquiries, James Cockerham may be reached at 770-593-8522. To purchase the “Reflections of the HEART” CD, go to www.cdbaby.com/cockerham3 .
