The national provider identifier (NPI) is the latest number that all health care professionals who submit claims must obtain. Most insurance companies are now requiring that the health care professional includes their NPI number on claims submitted to insurance companies. In addition, some specialists also must obtain the NPI numbers of the referring physician and include them on claims. Obtaining the NPI number of referring physicians can be extremely time consuming.

The user is encouraged to create an account in order to save their individual user preferences to expedite the searching process. The account user will also receive information and special offers from ICS Software, Ltd. periodically if requested. Currently, creating an account on https://www.npinumber.org provides the user with 25 free clicks on CheckMedicare.com whether they are a current subscriber or not. Checkmedicare.com is a website that allows providers to look up Medicare eligibility and benefit status. This website will even tell the provider how much of the deductible is left so it can be collected at the time of the visit. If the patient opted out of Medicare and is now with an HMO this website will give that information as well.
