First-Ever Festival to Honour Canada’s Multicultural Heritage

Begins Thursday in Toronto, Montreal

The “Colours of Folklore” festival brings together Canadians from all walks of life to celebrate Canada’s rich and diverse heritage.  Events will showcase over 1,000 cultural performers and a dozen top fashion designers from June 21-July 1, 2007. 

Toronto, Montreal / June 18, 2007 - It’s an unprecedented event in Canada.  Sixteen separate gatherings on six different stages in Toronto and Montreal will showcase over 1,000 cultural performers in a weeklong celebration of Canada’s diverse multicultural heritage.

The “Colours of Folklore” festival, presented by Sunrise Charity in partnership with TMK Productions, officially kicks off this Thursday, when more than 300 young Canadians, including representatives from several cultural communities and fashion models gather at the Hummingbird Centre in downtown Toronto to celebrate Canada’s Aboriginal Day.

“Colours of Folklore” Event Highlights:

June 21, 6:00pm:  Hummingbird Center, Downtown Toronto

Event kickoff.  Celebration of Canada’s Aboriginal Day

-Fashion show to showcase ethnic flavored collections from the up and coming designers.

-Performances from 15 dance groups representing more than a dozen ethnic communities, including:

Dance Caribe Performing Academy, a not-for- profit organization, the group from its beginnings has chosen as its roots Caribbean Dance as its main artistic expression. Now celebrating 17 years, DCPC's repertoire of dances embraces the cultural diversity that is unique to the Caribbean.

Arkan Dance Company, a dance company originating out of The Ukrainian Academy of Dance Inc., in Toronto. After 20 years the Academy has trained almost 1000 dancers, and built a solid performing company.

June 25, 6:00pm:  Salle Wilfrid Pelletier of Place des Arts, Montreal

Gala concert to showcase beauty of Canadian traditions and the unity of youth; honour National Multicultural Day.

June 30-July 1:  Georges O’Reilly Park on the waterfront, borough of Vedun, Montreal

-Largest single event of the festival features 1,000 performers of all ages.  The site will include the “Desjardins Stage,” sponsored by Caisse Populaire Desjardins.

-Non-stop shows daily 1:00 P.M.-11:00 P.M. showcasing the children of Canada, a collection of Montreal fashion designers, vocal and dance artists, and a lottery drawing of 45 prizes.

-“Multicultural Village “of 80 booths featuring local artisans, cultural groups, merchants and concession stands.

-Another venue located in the park is a large covered dance floor that will house the “Animation Square,” where the public may interact with dance professionals to learn simple and easy-to-learn dances from different cultures.

July 1, 4:30pm:  Georges O’Reilly Park on the waterfront, borough of Vedun, Montreal

VIP cocktail reception, discotheque area

10pm:  Fireworks display.

About Sunrise Charity:  The Sunrise Charity works to alleviate poverty through its food bank; comes to the aid of battered women by providing them shelter; and promotes integration into Canadian society through the sharing of culture and heritage.  The registered Canadian charity has produced this event in Montreal since 2004 and has decided to take the financial risk this year to expand the festivities. Heritage Canada and corporate funding financially support this year’s celebration.
