"Evolution of the Nude", a short internet video by the Blue Rose Group Arts Cooperative, has received the 2008 Crystal Award, given annually to films and videos which inspire and educate in an artistic context.
In three and a half minutes, the video reprises 3000 years of artistic history, showing how depictions of the female form have changed from the ancient Greeks to the present. Each image morphs into the next, giving an impression of continuous aesthetic creation, as if one artist painted all the images from the Venus de Milo till the 21st century. The award did not come without controversy, as one of the first images is a fresco painting taken from a wall at Pompeii which might be called history's first pornographic picture.
Another image which has caused consternation in some quarters is a pencil line drawing of a female nude made by a 19 year old Viennese art student early in the 20th century. The image would no doubt go unnoticed-- if the student artist's name were anything other than Adolph Hitler. The filmmakers are considering removing the offending drawing in future editings of the video.
