Live telecast in New York Central Park: Opening game Switzerland vs. the Czech Republic in Basel (Switzerland), June 7, 2008, 11.30 AM – 2 PM, courtesy of the Swiss Consulate General in New York, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and ESPN. Location: Central Park, Naumburg Bandshell (betw. 66th and 72nd Street).

As part of a series of activities which will take place in New York celebrating the UEFA European Football ChampionshipTM 2008, June 7 – 29, 2008 which is jointly organized by Austria and Switzerland.

Sixteen national teams have qualified for what is considered one of the world’s greatest sports events. Competing for the title of European Football Champion 2008 are: Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey. The tournament will be hosted by the cities of Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland and Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Salzburg and Vienna in Austria.

Cultural Events at the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York

Bread and Soccer Exhibition, May 28 – September 13, 2008
Bread and Soccer is an exhibition that looks at art, soccer and mass spectacle from the place where the amateur and the professional intermingle. The eleven featured artists, among them Swiss artist Nives Widauer, present works that suggest ways in which the cult of spectatorship meets the culture of participation.

“Eleven Minutes” short film program
A film program of Austrian and Swiss short films created on the occasion of the UEFA European Football ChampionshipTM 2008. Screenings: June 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th at 6.00 PM & 8.00 PM.

Foosball Tournaments: June 10, July 15, September 4, 2008, 7.00 PM – 10.00 PM
Challenge professional football players of the Red Bulls New York in foosball (tabletop soccer). A project by Monika Wührer.
