Bonneville, UT -- Sept 2-6, 2007 On the Bonneville Salt Flats, UT, Elecrtrobike establishes a new land speed record for electric motorcycles. Rider Kate Ingber, averaged 68.4 miles per hour over two runs in soaring heat on the Electrobike Pi-E model. Sponsors included Spring Ventures, Olive Works, and Metromint Water.
Electrobike Pi-E is normally powered by 48 volt LiION batteries but an electronics snafu required use of lead acid batteries sourced from a local Wendover, Utah auto parts store. While Electrobike founder Marcus Hays and team were happy to leave with the record, Marcus believes the production propulsion system is capable of significantly greater speed. “We’re planning to run at El Mirage Dry Lake in November and fully expect by that time to have our LiION battery issues sorted out. Because our motor, controller and electronics package never really got pushed at Bonneville by the lead acid batteries, with the higher performance chemistry in place and depending on conditions, significantly higher speeds are certainly possible.”
Bonneville also marked what may have been the first hybrid production motorcycle in Bonneville land speed competition as Electrobike pilot Sunil Paul hit the flats in September on Pi-X. Pi-X weighs but 120 pounds while offering a power-to-weight ratio of 2.3 horsepower per pound. The gas-electric aspect of the hybrid propulsion system equates to virtually limitless range. Unique to Pi-X is its offering of plug-in convenience with gas to electric ratio options that allow the owner to choose between full electric, gas-electric or all gas power. While Pi-X did not fair well during its LSR Bonneville competition debut, Pi-X will also compete at El Mirage on November 10th and 11th.
One of the prime motivations for competition at Bonneville is to not only demonstrate that production Electrobikes are capable of competition at the highest level of motorsport but ultimately “homologate” as a production-based product class per F.I.M and AMA rules of 500 units.
Electrobike was founded in 1995 by Marcus Levison-Hays. Based in San Francisco and Sausalito, California Electrobikes are manufactured in the U.S.A. Since inception they have been producing market leading electric and electric-hybrid powered drive trains. Their most recent design to date, Electrobike Pi, is destined to be the most important electric bicycle of the century.
