Parents Can Protect Their Children from a Worldwide Drug Epidemic

New Poster Encouraging Dialogue Between Adults and Children

New York, NY – The U.S. is currently in the middle of its most costly anti-drug campaign in history, yet drugs are killing 15,000 Americans each year. The irony is that drug use is probably the world’s leading “preventable” health problem.

This is the message of hope now being circulated by the New York-based International Drug Awareness Research Foundation (IDARF) in the form of a new poster that is increasingly making its way in homes. The poster is titled “The Self-Destructive Use of Drugs,” and it is being credited for helping spur the talk about drugs around kitchen tables and in classrooms in many countries around the world, and opening the communication channels between parents and teens that will persuade kids from using drugs

Experts worldwide agree that the most effective way to proof children from the harmful effects of using drugs is to shift the focus to prevention through increased and enhanced awareness and early education. For parents, talking about drugs can be a tough job. “The Self-Destructive Use of Drugs” does it in plain language, using plain medical facts, displaying the mind-body drug connection in one powerful graphic that instantly and vividly summarizes the most commonly used drugs and their effects on the user.

The adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words” is so true when displayed in the family playroom or a teen’s bedroom, the poster acts as a constant visual reminder driving home the destructive effects of substance abuse in a straightforward, non judgmental manner.

The international illicit drug trade is a $400 billion a year business. According to a United Nations report, tobacco use globally is responsible for some 5 million deaths each year.  In the U.S., nearly 8,000 people are trying drugs for the first time every day.  The majority of new users are younger than 18 and more than half are female. Among U.S. teenagers and young adults alone, fatal drug overdoses have soared 113 percent.

New global coalition aims to unite and empower parents who are tired of watching children die as drug epidemic spreads worldwide

It’s numbers like that that prompted IDARF to launch a global coalition aimed at encouraging dialogue between parents and their teens about drug use.  The coalition also plans to influence governments and policymakers by petitioning for mandatory drug awareness and education.
