Dorothy Champion Smaniotto shows how hope, humor and faith have helped her as she deals with her and her son's medical illnesses in "The Burgundy Journey: Using Hope, Humor & Faith to Conquer Adversity. No Matter What"

OCEAN VIEW, N.J. (MMD Newswire) November 22, 2011 -- "The Burgundy Journey: Using Hope, Humor & Faith to Conquer Adversity. No Matter What" (ISBN 0615558429) details the everyday struggles Dorothy Champion Smaniotto faces as a result of her numerous health conditions and her son's struggle with Asperger's Syndrome.

"The Burgundy Journey" is an autobiographical story about living with the constant struggles of a body that has been battered, but a spirit that is unyielding. It describes the medical conditions that Smaniotto has been diagnosed with and the joy and faith that she uses to overcome her physical limitations.

Smaniotto has a rare incurable autoimmune disease that many people don't believe since it's not outwardly visible. Smaniotto's disease, Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), isn't understood and often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed because of its similarities to other medical conditions.

Her disease causes blood clots, abnormally resulting in Smaniotto already having a stroke, two heart attacks and a miscarriage. She was also diagnosed with a family gene mutation for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Smaniotto had a hysterectomy and a double mastectomy due to the diagnosis but has been turned down for Social Security disability because some believe she isn't disabled.

However, through it all, Smaniotto has remained positive and learned how to deal with her problems head on. She says that humor, hope and faith help her deal with any and every situation and that it makes a difference to how one sees a situation.

In addition to her own struggles, her son has been diagnosed with Asperger's disease, a classification of high functioning autism. She stresses that regardless of their issues, children who are different due to medical problems can still contribute to society and lead fulfilling lives.
