New novel emphasizes African-American resilience

Except by Nature's Plan by Darrel J. Mulloy offers examples of self-reliance and accountability through three generations of black men

LAKEVIEW, Ore. (MMD Newswire) June 24, 2009 -- Except by Nature's Plan by Darrel J. Mulloy is a story of three generations of African-Americans who overcame obstacles to stand on their own feet. Based on experiences and perspectives of the author, the novel argues against the misperception that minority groups cannot succeed without welfare and other government handouts.

"It doesn't matter what hand life has dealt you, you have every opportunity to succeed," Mulloy says. "I was inspired by the writings of Walter E. Williams, Thomas Sowell and Mychal Massie, to whom I give credit in the book."

When Leroy was drafted in 1943 to serve in World War II, he was forced to leave his home in Texas and experience a complex world outside his rural upbringing. After the war, he settled in California to start a business and raise a family. The narrative continues with Leroy's son Calvin, a basketball prodigy who played for Coach John Wooden at UCLA and later became a pastor. The story concludes by focusing on Damien, whom Calvin mentored and took under his wing. Damien learns, by the examples of both Calvin and Leroy, the importance of character and self-reliance.
