Cottages Leave the Backwoods in Favor of Floating on the Bay

March 9, 2007 -- Catamaran Cruisers may have an alternative for those who can’t afford expensive water-front property: The Aqua-Lodge, a floating “cottage”.

While the cottage inhabits the backwoods and fringes on the lake shore, this watercraft proudly rests in the bay next to sleek, ocean going yachts.

Bolt a motor to her stern and the Aqua-Lodge cruises at about 12 miles per hour.

The Aqua-Lodge is not designed for the open ocean.  Its creator, Columbia, Tenn. based Catamaran Cruisers, claims these houseboats can weather nature’s fury in coves, inlets or lakes – their natural habitat.  She’s rumored to sleep 8.  And an over front porch sundeck adds to the fun in the sun.

During recent 70 mph squalls in Virginia that sent veterans cowering for cover, Flip Eubank said his Aqua-Lodge gently rocked him to sleep.

He and his wife, Gladys, paid $ 58,900 for their 42 foot vessel.

Until two years ago, the Eubanks, who are in their 70’s owned a second home on the Virginia shore line.

“We moved into a gated community but realized we missed the water after living on it for 21 years,” Gladys said.

They spend most of their weekdays inland but head for the houseboat on weekends.

Linda Koren, whose “lodge” is docked across from the Eubanks’, said she needed a place to crash when not on her 30-foot sailboat.

“We just wanted a place that would be more like a home”, she said.

Catamaran Cruisers has 25 years in the houseboat industry with over 4,600 boats delivered.  They offer a full line of houseboats that have been shipped all over the world.

Landlocked cottages, consider yourselves warned.
