CASA’s East Coast A Cappella Summit Celebrates All-Vocal Music
With Weekend of Concerts and Master Classes to Raise Money for Charity
On March 23-25, 2007 the Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA) will present the East Coast A Cappella Summit- a weekend of master classes and concerts showcasing, celebrating, and teaching the art of contemporary a cappella, hosted by South Lake High School in Reston, VA.
Reston, VA – On March 23, 24, and 25, the South Lakes High School will host CASA’s East Coast A Cappella Summit: four all-vocal concerts and more than a dozen master classes featuring Blue Jupiter, Inpulse, Almost Recess, Altavoz, Barry Carl (of Rockapella Fame), DC’s own BlueLine, Euphonism, and Voices USA, Yo-Yo Beats and Adam Matta- NYC Beatboxers, Barbershop Champions Men in Black. Business As Usual, Wes Carroll of the House Jacks, Mark Surprenant of NCHSA, CASA’s A cappella Showcase Chorus, noted a cappella producers Jonathan Minkoff, Bill Hare and Freddie Feldman, Broadway performer and manager Diana Preisler, and many other nationally recognized performers and speakers including a special performance by the South Lakes High School Chorus during the weekend.

Proceeds will go to CASA, a 501(c)(3) charity, founded in 1990 to foster and promote a cappella music and to “Fight for a Seahawk”- a South Lakes High School student battling cancer. All performers, organizers and speakers donate their efforts.
A cappella is the art of creating music using only the human voice. While melody and harmony have a featured place, contemporary a cappella utilizes all-vocally-produced textures to imitate guitars, drums, horns, synthesizers and other instruments. The results are so convincing that audiences have trouble believing that they are only hearing voices. Major recording artists like Bobby McFerrin, Todd Rundgren, Take 6, Manhattan Transfer, and Bjork have helped to make contemporary a cappella very popular among students, as evidenced in part by the meteoric rise in high school and collegiate a cappella groups nationwide.
The focus of the Summit is oriented towards contemporary a cappella, which is often influenced by Rock, Pop, R&B, Jazz and World Music, however the traditional a cappella forms of doo-wop and barbershop will also be represented by world class performers.
CASA’s East Coast A Cappella Summit features all-vocal performances at its four unique concerts and teaches students and fans how to create this unique art form during two days of seminars.
Weekend Schedule:
CONCERTS: Friday 8:00 PM; Saturday 2:00 & 8:00 PM; Sunday 2:00 PM
MASTERCLASSES: Saturday 9-5 & Sunday 9-4.
