500 youths from all over the world convene for climate camp in Denmark in August

(MMD Newswire) June 3, 2009 -- On August 8th to 11th 14-18 year olds from more than 45 countries meet in Denmark under the auspices of Bright Green Youth to propose solutions to future climate challenges.

Where should climate friendly transport of people take place in the future? What initiatives should we take in order to produce climate friendlier homes? And what should we do with regard to food transport if we are also to consider the climate?

Those are just some of the questions which will be taken up when 500 youths from more than 45 countries of all continents convene for the Bright Green Youth Climate Camp in Sønderborg, Denmark, on August 8th to 11th. In the span of these four days, they will come up with ideas and suggestions for what we can do to solve future climate challenges.

Bright Green Youth is the youth counterpart of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen in December. The opening ceremony on August 8th will be attended by ministers from Denmark and abroad, among others.

"It is our aim to inspire youths all over the world to assume greater responsibility for the climate and environment debate - and the 500 participants in the Danish camp will be messengers who are to spread the word of the mission globally. The camp will take place on the youths' terms and in ways which they consider natural," says Charlotte Sahl-Madsen, head of the Bright Green Youth project group and Managing Director of the Danfoss Universe educational park.

Consequently, rather than a traditional conference, this will be an idea development camp in which the 500 youths will generate concrete proposals - across age, sex, skin colour, nationality, and cultural boundaries. They will be working in small groups and be given input from international scientists and companies based on which they will develop their own ideas for products and services.

"The youths are to inspire each other across national borders and personal climate change experience. It is important that youths from the world's poorest countries participate and generate their own proposals - and tell other people of the circumstances under which they live," says Vibeke Vinther, Communication Director of the MS Danish Association for International Co-operation.

Bright Green Youth has entered into a strategic partnership with Climate Consortium Denmark, the official focal point for all Danish business-related activities leading up to COP15.
