“After our 18-month old daughter began removing her clothing at naptime and bedtime, we searched endlessly for a garment that could not be removed without our knowledge. While we wanted to encourage her creativity, coordination, and self-exploration, we worried that loose garments in the crib created a dangerous suffocation and strangulation hazard” explain Mookimoo Sleepwear founders and co-owners Randy and Dana Reid. “We had always avoided bulky blankets as recommended by our pediatrician, so there was also an issue of keeping her warm and comfortable. We tried everything we could think of, but our persistent toddler outsmarted us every time…and often at the expense of valuable, restorative sleep.

“The day we walked into the nursery to find her completely naked, covered in the contents of her messy diaper, we were convinced if a solution didn’t exist, we needed to create one” said Randy. Out of sheer desperation, Randy, a retired Coast Guard Officer and stay-at-home dad, took a pair of scissors to a traditional one-piece sleeper, hacked off the footies, cut the neckline, and put the makeshift garment on the couple’s daughter - backwards!

“The original ‘Mooki’ was born and while it wasn’t the most comfortable or fashionable garment, it worked! We were ecstatic…problem solved” recalls the couple.
