Seven Million Trees planted in Latin America. Now first USA tree to be planted as Eco Ultra-Marathon enters 4th year.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (MMD Newswire) August 3, 2011 - - Professor Henry Sanchez, the Barefoot Eco-Runner, is running from Argentina to Alaska to bring awareness of protecting and reforesting our planet. As he enters each city, volunteers and community organizations join him to plant trees, recycle and present educational talks. After running barefoot through fourteen countries he is now crossing the border from Tijuana into San Diego, CA on August 18th, 2011.

Traveling light with only two shirts and a pair of pants, his ultra-marathon began on June 15th, 2008 in Patagonia, Argentina. Running barefoot is symbolic of his connection to mother-earth. To date he has planted more than seven million trees and recycled 2,000 tons of garbage. As a Columbianvolunteer firefighter, four hundred firehouses have supported him throughout his journey by providing shelter and food.

A professor of mathematics and environmental engineering, Henry first ran in 2001 to bring awareness of a proposal to destroy an active Columbian senior shelter. Then in 2003, he ran to promote the need for constructing a facility for disabled citizens. Today, he is running to promote environmental protection.

Now this strong willed Columbian will enter the USA through Tijuana, Mexico. Upon crossing the border on August 18th, Henry will run to a ceremonial tree planting and official welcome event in San Ysidro, CA.

With support from San Diego Urban Corps, California Center for Sustainable Energy, CalFire, Forest Advisory Board, San Diego Urban Tree Club, SDG&E, Bomberos de San Diego and the City of San Diego, Henry's first big American tree planting and educational event will take place on Saturday, August 20th at the Linda Vista San Diego Library. Additional environmental events and educational lectures are also planned.

After San Diego, plans are to run into major cities of California, including Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Jose, Sacramento, and San Francisco. Starting January 2012 other U.S. cities will be added including New York, Chicago and Washington DC as he continues his journey to Alaska

Throughout this journey, his eyes have seen incredible devastation to the environment from glacier melting to pollution. Henry says, "Climate change is obvious in all the countries I have gone to. We need to push our governments and corporations to be environmentally responsible. We have devoured nature with our constructions and destroyed trees indiscriminately by the millions of acres. If we continue this way we will surely experience an environmental catastrophe. But I am convinced through awareness and education we can make a change. This is why I contribute my time and dedication to this cause. And if one must sacrifice to make this happen for the benefit of humanity, I am honored to be the one."

The goal is for Henry to reach Alaska in Fall 2012 and along the way his dream is to meet Al Gore. Free Latino Classifieds has committed to stand behind this cause and make sure Henry's dreams become reality.
