Born to a Christian mother and a loving father, in our home, church was mandatory. Our Sunday mornings consisted of 8:00a.m. Sunday school and 11:00a.m. church service. My love for the Lord manifested in early childhood. I have never known life with out praise; Although, I was baptized at the age of thirteen, I began to sing God’s praise at a very young age. My mother believes I sung my first solo before I was eight years old.
At age twenty, I married the love of my life, Mr. Bobby Davis to whom I am still happily married. The Lord blessed us with two wonderful daughters, Angel and Arriel, who also love the Lord.
The arts have always intrigued me. I received my first formal vocal training in “Girls Chorus” at East Ascension High School. I loved to sing all kinds of music, and my first desire was to sing soul music. I admired Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and others. At age nineteen I was asked to background two songs for Tabby Thomas, a local blues legend. This was my first introduction into the recording industry. After the recording session the producer asked me to write my rendition of any Mahalia Jackson song, and he would record it for free, but I declined. It was not my desire to make singing a professional career at that time. All of my life I have continued to sing gospel for most local events: Weddings, festivals, banquets, wakes, funerals, reunions, college orientation, etc. Some of my most cherished performances were: an opening act for Sis. Shirley Caesar; shared the stage with Doug / Melvin Williams, Christianaires, and to have been introduced by such greats as Mr. Luther Barnes, Mr. Paul Porter, and our own local legend: The late Sis. Eula Mae Hatter of WXOK radio. |
